Olive Ear phone

Design

The Olive Smart Ear is a circular body type single white plastic earpiece. There are two microphone holes in the back panel. In between two holes, a touch-sensitive surface controls the earpiece by holding and tapping it. Tap twice to increase volume, tap once to decrease volume, and hold for power and pairing mode. The Smart Ear is not water-resistant with a certified IP rating in any way, so don’t wear it during swimming or shower.

Instead of having any hooks or fins, the earpiece comes with two rubber rings within the plastic body to add a bit of thickness and texture to it for a more secure fit. The Olive Smart Ear also includes two foam ear-tips and three silicone ear-tips of different sizes. With the right ear-tip and the ring, the earpiece will sit comfortably and securely in your ear.

With a cube-shaped charging case, the Olive Smart Ear has no lid or hinge in the charging case. This charging case is a single block of plastic with a space in the middle to expand an earpiece’s indentation. The earpiece sits securely in its recess during charging. It never fell out of the case while walking around by taking it into the pocket.

There are a micro USB port and indicator light on one side of the case. Also, the Smart Ear itself lights up during charging. The Olive Union claims that the Smart Ear can withstand up to seven hours with the full charge, and even the case provides two additional charges.

Different Modes and Calibration

Connecting through a smartphone, Android, or iOS, the Smart Ear functions as a monaural earphone and provides sound enhancement controls through the Olive app. Users can switch in between three sound modes such as Default (enhancement of general sound), Conversation (speech enhancement), and TV Mode (while watching TV on your smartphone) using this App. Avoid giving feedback on your experience with the earpiece’s microphones; there is also a toggle Feedback Cancellation.

With a quick calibration process, the App determines whether you put the Olive Smart Ear in-ear and tap your phone while you start to hear different music of varying frequencies. This calibration determines the Smart Ear’s EQ curve based on gender (only male and female are selectable), your birth year and month, and whether you already have experience with it (all fields you enter in the App) for enhancing frequency bands. Users can also adjust this EQ manually. By calibrating through the App, users can use two Smart Ears at once to enhance the hearing, but only one Smart Ear can be connected to smartphones at a time.

Performance

The three sound modes in Olive Smart Ear are quite different in producing background hum. Besides generating a baseline level of white noise-like fuzz, Default and TV Mode both boost surrounding sound. Conversation mode has no fuzz because it specifically picks up voices to boost a much more narrow range of frequencies.

It will take time for users to be with the hearing enhancement feature. The earpiece picks up certain frequency bands and then identifies certain sounds in those bands. Depending on the modes and the calibration, it enhances the sound. During walking outside with the Olive Smart Ear, it is set in Default mode in the right ear used to a low hum. The sound comes through fuzzily is expected to be enhanced, but the earpiece picked up more clear sounds of shoes scuffing on the sidewalk, people talking, etc.

During watching TV on smartphones, the Olive Smart Ear is set to TV Mode. It picked up the TV sound and enhanced it to be sounded natural. As this mode stands on top of the baseline white noise, it delivers extra clear sound against the low hum’s fuzziness. I switched to the Conversation mode cut out the white noise. But this mode didn’t help more in enhancement and seems to be limited in terms of boosting sound.

It does not provide a notable boost in sensitivity due to not a superhuman hearing outside in limited cases. Users can hear footsteps or words from the outside if the source was angled just right. But, it adds a bit of a boost to sounds most of the time. During calibration, the effect will differ for the user with poorer hearing.

Music and Calls Quality

It’s impossible with a single Smart Ear to get stereo sound, but it produces balanced and crisp audio for music. During playing any audio through the earpiece, the sound enhancement functions of Smart Ears have stopped immediately, and it plays only the streamed sound of it. The earpiece works very well for podcasts too. Walking around, the Castle Super Beast Cast delivers clear and robust sound.

Calls through Olive Smart Ear is also quite well. The microphones on the earpiece picked up voice during calls without any issue. As the microphones aren’t designed to block the Olive Smart Ear’s outside noise, so users won’t get the best quality of voice as they will get in a Bluetooth headset that provides a dedicated noise-cancelling mic.

A Powerful Not-Quite Hearing Aid

The Olive Smart Ear can improve your hearing with some sophisticated audio processing and sensitive microphones. But it is not a hearing aid in the medical sense. It’s still used as a monaural earphone to listen to music, take calls, and podcasts that conventional hearing aids can’t do. Although 300 dollars is quite a hefty price for any earphone, it’s much less than a hearing aid. Overall, the Olive Ear is a viable and non-medical alternative.

Pros

  • Compared to other Smart Earphones, Olive Smart Ear enhances nearby sounds, including with healthy balance to avoid disorientation.
  • It works well to listen to music, podcasts, and taking calls as a monaural earphone.
  • It is much less expensive compared to a medical hearing aid.

Cons

  • It’s not a medically approved device for severe hearing loss.
  • During default and TV mode, it produces a slight white noise like a hiss.
  • Lack of stereo limits decreases its usefulness as earphones.
  • It is expensive than wire-free earphones.

Our Opinion

Earphones are helping in better hearing, although it will take a few days for used to. People are using this to hear and listen much better. Due to multiple frequency amplification, the Default and TV mode in the earbuds provided some buzzing noise. While during the conversation mode, a minimal background white noise buzz passes through the earbuds that require amplification of one voice frequency.
