Baidu EV Jidu Aims To Deliver 800000 Robot Cars By 2028

Baidu EV Jidu Aims to deliver 800000 robot cars by 2028, said by Jidu chief executive Joe Xia Yiping. On Wednesday, Baidu’s Electric Vehicle arm Jidu Auto launched a conceptual robot car, the first electric vehicle revealed by a Chinese Internet Company.

Xia also said that Jidu is planning to deliver a second model of a robot car by 2024 for mass production, and aims to deliver 800000 models in 2028. Jidu revealed its first robot car concept in June, without door handles and you can control it via voice recognition.

Jidu’s “robot” vehicles will be equipped with two lidars and 12 cameras, in addition to autonomous driving software technology supplied by Baidu. Lidars are radar-like detecting devices that employ pulsed laser light rather than radio frequencies.

The prototype automobile, which has no door handles and can be controlled entirely by speech, was unveiled during an online press conference on Baidu’s metaverse-themed app Xirang. Jidu, a Baidu-controlled electric vehicle business co-funded by Chinese manufacturer Geely, intends to mass build the model, which will be 90% compared to the concept car, in 2023.

The ‘robot’ EVs will include self-driving Level 4 capabilities that do not require human involvement, as well as Qualcomm’s 8295 processors, which will allow customers to obtain voice help offline when internet connectivity is inadequate. Baidu’s EV-making proposal comes as tech companies across the world scramble to build smart cars in the aftermath of Tesla’s commercialization of electric automobiles.

Along with integrating the vehicle with Baidu-powered autonomous driving software, Jidu will also construct two lidars and 12 cameras. Similar to radars, lidars are detecting devices, except instead of using radio waves, they employ pulsed laser light.

Joe Xia Yiping, chief executive of Jidu, stated that “the Jidu robot car intends to answer consumers’ expectations for intelligent travel and intelligent cabin in the new era,” adding that “the ultimate goal is to actualize an autonomous transportation experience.”

According to Luo Gang, chief of operations at Jidu, who spoke to Reuters in an interview on Wednesday, Jidu automobiles would target customers who enjoy cutting-edge technology. The EVs will be produced at Hangzhou Bay, one of Geely’s several factories in Ningbo, a city in eastern China.

Jidu has appointed ex-Cadillac designer Frank Wu as its director of design, and Wang Weibao, a former member of Apple Inc’s Project Titan EV project, as its head of intelligent driving. Jidu’s initial model will cost more than 200,000 yuan ($29,914.59), according to Baidu CEO Robin Li during a conference call last month.
